Well, firstly, go and see a doctor, I would think. Secondly, it might be a lack of iodine in your diet. Shellfish, and iodized salt, and the like.

Lack of salt? I would think an enlarged thyroid could be actually aggravated due to an enlarged thyroid, but I would certainly recommend checking with your doctor and doing some blood panel work to see what the real deal is.

If your thyroid is enlarged, it could signal a problem. Be sure to see your doctor as soon as possible. They will check your Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) level and if it is too high or too low, they will prescribe medication such as synthroid or levothyroxine. They may also order diagnostic tests if they believe you have a goiter. These may include an ultrasound of your thyroid gland or a fine-needle biopsy to rule out cancer. Hope this helps!

You have to understand that an enlarged thyroid always should be evaluated; the condition might be due to any of several different thyroid disorders. None of which is good for you. Problems in the thyroid can affect your energy levels, muscle strength, body weight, skin health, menstrual cycle, memory, heart rate and cholesterol levels.

And as bubblegum says, its normally lack of iodine in the diet that leads to Goiter or enlarged thyroid.

One common cause to elarged the tyroid gland or goiter is in the increase of thyroid stimulating hormone. It comes from the pituary glands causes the tyroid to enlarge. It takes years before it could become a illness.
